Who are Short-Term Coworkers?
Short-term coworkers generally come to Camphill for a one year stay, although some choose to stay on in Camphill for longer periods, as well. Some communities accept coworkers who wish to come for shorter stays, especially during the summer.
Short-term coworkers are idealistic and service-oriented, and bring energy and vibrancy to their Camphill communities.
Most short-term coworkers:
- Have graduated from high school
- Have at least some college or university experience
Short-term coworkers may join Camphill...
- For a break in their college studies, or for a "gap year"
- Between college and graduate school
- After spending some time in the workplace, to search for a meaningful new experience or way of life
The Work of Short-Term Coworkers
Short-term coworkers play an important supportive role in Camphill communities. Within the household community, they provide physical and emotional care to house members with disabilities, teach and model life skills, and assist in a wide range of householding duties.
In the community, they are involved in various activities, including assisting in classrooms, in an art or crafts workshop, or on the land. They generally work in groups along with other coworkers and disabled community members.
Benefits
Short-term coworkers are supported by their communities for their living needs. They receive:
- Full room and board
- Medical insurance (immediately or after three months, depending on the community)
- Vacation time
- A modest stipend for personal needs
In addition, coworkers who are eligible and join AmeriCorps will receive the AmeriCorps Education Award of $4725 following one year of service, which can be applied towards existing student loans, or to tuition payments up to 7 years in the future. The AmeriCorps program is limited to U.S. citizens and green card holders.
